2022 is here! Another year into the COVID-19 pandemic, we are kicking things off with health and wellness top-of-mind. Use this list, based on of the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual global survey, to ensure your fitness facility is staying on-trend with the top fitness categories that are resonating around the world right now.
1: Wearable Technology
Consistently in the top three trends since 2016, wearable technology includes smart watches, fitness trackers, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices. Used to record workouts, track heart rate, measure oxygen levels, and monitor sleep, among several other options, wearable technology is estimated to be around a U.S. $100 billion industry.
Exercisers can use the Preva® Mobile app to sync workouts that they’ve recorded from their own wearable devices. Connections with Preva Mobile include: Garmin®, Strava®, Apple Health®, Fitbit®, MapMyFitness®, Polar®, and more.*
2: Home Exercise Gyms
2022 is the first year this trend has appeared on the ACSM list, but it makes sense given that many exercisers are opting to work out within their own homes as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Thanks to the convenience and abundance of effective online classes, and the fact that minimal equipment is required, home gyms are growing in popularity.
3: Outdoor Activities
Another trend impacted by the pandemic, outdoor activities have increased to #3, up one from the #4 spot in 2021. People are seeking opportunities to explore outside through hiking, biking, walking, and running where they can maintain safe distances from others while enjoying fresh air.
The Preva Mobile app makes it easy for exercisers to consolidate both their indoor and outdoor workout stats in one space. Check it out today!
4: Strength Training with Free Weights
This category has jumped four spots, from #8 in 2021. Strength training with free weights includes kettlebells, barbells, free weights, dumbbells, and medicine balls. This style of training is specific to the instruction of proper exercise form. Once mastery is achieved with each exercise’s form, increased resistance and new exercises are added to build progressively.
Precor benches and racks can accommodate exercisers of all fitness levels and are perfect for storing the free weight accessories your exercisers use. Keep up with the free weight training trend by exploring Precor Strength.
5: Exercise for Weight Loss
Always a top-20 trend since the ACSM survey began, exercise for weight loss has made a comeback in 2022, perhaps due to the quarantines brought on by COVID-19. When done in conjunction with many diet programs, exercise adds calories burned into the overall equation.
6: Personal Training
A top-ten trend since 2006, the field of personal training has become more easily accessible online, in the office, at home, and at health clubs. One-on-one training involves personal trainers working with clients to prescribe workouts that will meet their specific goals.
Using the Advagym app, your facility’s personal trainers can communicate directly with their clients, all while keeping track of workouts and progress. Explore the Advagym app today.
7: High Intensity Interval Training
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been in the ACSM’s top seven fitness trends since 2014. HIIT exercise programs include bursts of high-intensity exercise, followed by short periods of rest and recovery, making them ideal for completing efficient workouts in 30 minutes or less. HIIT incorporates cardio, strength training, or a combination of the two.
Precor cardio equipment gives exercisers a top-notch experience, making HIIT drills easy to facilitate. As a bonus, all our products are built to withstand high impact movement and offer a warranty that keeps them running at their best. See Precor Cardio.
8: Body Weight Training
The pandemic has caused people to rethink their normal workout routines and to focus on how they can exercise in limited space, with limited props or equipment. With this style of training, exercisers use the weight of their body, plus movement, to build muscle. Examples of body weight exercises include squats, lunges, push-ups, burpees, and dips.
In-facility body weight workouts can be supplemented with our benches and racks. If your exercisers prefer home-based workouts for now, we recommend they explore the selection of at-home body weight exercises within Advagym.
