Reformer Pilates - and why it is the workout you should give a go!
Who is a lover of Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates has quickly become one of the most popular exercises sweeping the country. But why? The machine itself may look slightly daunting at first but effectively, when using a reformer you are able to intensify and focus on exercises to create incredible results – quickly.
The reformer machine was designed by Joseph Pilates, the founder of Pilates, in the 1920s and involves a system of springs, ropes, pulleys and a carriage.
The reformer itself has a plethora of amazing benefits for not just the body but also the mind due to controlled breathwork used throughout. Overall it is an incredible innovative invention when it comes to fitness equipment and with many classes all over New Zealand, then it is definitely something we should all give a go - at least once!
Benefits wise, I wanted to touch on a few of these as they are really worth mentioning.
You will get a full body workout
When using this machine with carefully choreographed routines and movements, this works the full body through both the large muscle groups but also the smaller stabilisers allowing for a well-balanced workout.
It tones muscles and build strength
By using the machines springs and levers to create resistance, this allows for equal focus on both contraction of muscles as well as eccentric release which builders longer, leaner muscles. You can also choose how much you choose to push yourself through the different levels of resistance making a workout achievable for all fitness types.
Workouts are low impact but high intensity
These are the words that you want to read when researching a new exercise. The reformer Pilates routines are the absolute best of both worlds when it comes to working out. Due to the amount of variations, you can control with resistance, Reformer Pilates classes are a great option if you're suffering from injury as you can work low-impact flexibility and muscular strength or endurance movements if you really want to push yourself.
It creates a stronger core and better posture
In a world of hunching over our computer desks or phones, an incredible benefit of Pilates is that many of the exercises target the core whilst working the peripheral muscles at the same time, so you will be create defined muscle while also improving your posture.
On top of this, Pilates will also assist in building a healthy headspace. From a mental health perspective, the benefits include improving memory; training the brain with a much needed endorphin kick as well as relieving anxiety and depression.
